Dog and Puppy Training At Home

When we talk about canine training at home we think about doing it all by ourselves, training our puppies the way our parents did, or what worked before with our other dogs. Most people believe they know how to train dogs and do not want or need help doing it. They may think the pooch training at home starts with potty training and proceeds with complex commands.

Many pet owners turn to books or films to show them pooch training at home. There are ordinarily two sorts of methodologies to canine training at home, food reward or repetition. Food reward is using treats as bribes to reward a puppy’s behaviour. Repetition training is repeating commands or requests to a dog does it. Some people try these methods together, but both can develop bad habits. You don’t want or need to use food to get a dog to do what it should. Repeating commands teach a dog that it does not have to listen to you the first time you tell it. Repetition training is more asking than commanding and should be used for trick training not obedience or manners training.

When you begin dog training at home always start with positive. Praising your puppy or new dog while it is doing the right things, the things you want it to do. A loving bond between master and canine is always the best foundation for respect and developing that respect to be able to show any dog what pleases and displeases you as pack leader.

Canine Psychology Basics - Know What Your Dog is thinking.

k9 Dog Training MelbourneAll pooch owners jump at the chance to believe they are in control of their puppies, yet the fact is many are definitely not. Canines are pack animals, they are born with an instinct to fit into a pack to be a part of their pack, in particular please the leader of the pack. If the owner does not show consistent leadership the canine might attempt to rule.

One extremely helpful method for telling what your puppy thinking, or feeling, is their non-verbal communication. Pooches characteristically convey to one another through their non-verbal communication, and there are a few of things to pay special mind to.

In Home Dog Training
Trust - canine stands tall with tail up.

Fear - ears down, low stance, attempting to make it look small. Tail between legs.

Wants to play - front legs brought down with behind still in the air with wagging tail.

Quarrel ready - firm legs and stance. Ears stuck back. The hackles, the hair along its back, standing up.

These are some signs a canine will show that can be easy to read, you can tell what your pooch is feeling.

Nonverbal communication is a paramount part of dog psychology. If that you can read your mutts non-verbal communication, you can better recognize what it is feeling.

LABRADOOLE PUPPY

I taught a family with a Labradoole puppy, almost 6 months old, last weekend. Another one of those smart pups that had her pack trained to let her do what she wanted. Playing with their four year old son as a puppy, playful biting, jumping up, and running off with anything she picked up. She knew what “sit” meant but only did when she wanted to or for food. I love those sessions. As I always say, like magic with no mystery “Better than Magic”. I left a happy pooch with a very happy family.

English Cocker Spaniel Puppy

I taught a Better than Magic puppy training session with an English Cocker Spaniel puppy last weekend. Cute little 10 week old pups that loved the playful biting. One of those puppies that would not let you pet him without trying to turn it into play by biting your hand, or whatever he could get hold of. I show his owners how to teach him refusal as part of their training and he understood immediately. Before I left we were putting our hands to his mouth and he was turning his head to keep it from going in his mouth. All positive, he was happily earning praise by refusing, win-win situation all around. As I always say, like magic with no mystery “Better than Magic”.
