A LEARNING PATTERNS

From the beginning, you, as the dog owner and trainer, must understand what causes a dog to accept or reject or reject training. Over the years we have discovered that, as a general, it is possible to deal with most dogs at the level of a four or five year old child. We must keep this in mind always especially when considering a dog’s attention span. Most dogs have short attention spans.

KEEP TRAINING SESSIONS SHORT AND FUN!

Many people have the mistaken belief, dogs will only respond to tidbits of food as a reward, or withholding same as punishment. I consider that bribery and we do not need or want to always carry treats to get a dog to perform. What your dog wants and needs more than anything else is your praise, your approval. This is what the dog is striving for, and this is what will give you far more benefit than any treat or bribe that you may offer.

The dog’s strongest drive, again, is to please the master and generally the people around him. Understanding this we can see that the best way to get the proper response from a dog is to use this strong drive to accomplish our goals. We must communicate what we find pleasant and not.
